Nvidia has announced that the Trump administration is reversing course on its decision to restrict the sale of Nvidia’s H20 chips to China after President Trump met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang last week ahead of Jensen’s trip to China.
The administration has continuously touted its commitment to ensuring American dominance in AI, but this decision undermines this promise. Without proper, robust export controls, our adversaries will smuggle American technology to create advanced AI systems without American and democratic values in mind – all while Big Tech turns greater profits without concern for the impact on national security.
“Securing American chips is critical for spurring innovation and maintaining AI dominance around the world. The Trump administration’s decision to permit Nvidia to ship H20 chips to China is a win for Big Tech and a loss for the American people,” said Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI. “Our advanced chips cannot fall into the hands of our adversaries. I hope that the administration will see the negative impact this decision will have on its promise to secure America’s lead in AI. This is a time for leadership and strength, and enacting America First principles when it comes to AI. The administration must immediately reverse this decision.”
