Today, The Alliance for Secure AI commended Sen. Elissa Slotkin’s (D-MI) introduction of the AI Guardrails Act, which codifies critical red lines for the Department of Defense’s use of AI in the military. The legislation declares that the power to launch nuclear weapons remains solely with the Commander-in-Chief; prohibits the use of AI for mass surveillance of the American people; and bans the use of autonomous weapons without human involvement.
The Alliance for Secure AI, Common Cause, and Young Americans for Liberty sent a letter to members of Congress last month demanding that they take action following the Pentagon’s refusal to agree to Anthropic’s lines in the sand to not use AI for mass surveillance or the launch of autonomous weapons.
“The terms outlined in the AI Guardrails Act are common sense measures that would ensure humans stay in control as AI is used in the military. It is up to Congress to provide oversight over federal agencies and guarantee that they act in accordance with existing laws and the Constitution, and this legislation does just that,” said Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI.
“Questions need to be answered as to how AI is used for lethal force by the United States and around the world. Congress cannot let this moment pass without action. We applaud Sen. Slotkin for her work on the AI Guardrails Act and we encourage members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to join her in protecting national security while preserving our liberties.”
