Pope Leo XIV Makes it Clear: Human Dignity Must Be Protected in the Era of AI

Following the release of Pope Leo XIV’s encyclical addressing AI’s impact on the future of human dignity, purpose, and work, Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI, released the following statement:

“Pope Leo XIV’s new encyclical offers much-needed moral clarity and guidance at a moment when leaders around the world are grappling with the profound implications of advanced AI. We welcome the Catholic Church’s leadership on these issues and appreciate the thoughtful framework the Holy Father has offered for navigating the opportunities and risks presented by AI. The existential questions raised by AI will affect every person and community, regardless of faith or background – and we must be prepared to answer these questions from a humans-first perspective.

“Over a century ago, Pope Leo XIII released the landmark 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum during the Industrial Revolution, another period of profound technological change and economic displacement. We are now facing new and unprecedented questions about human dignity and purpose, this time in the age of AI. We agree with the Holy Father that human beings must remain at the center of conversations about the future of AI.”
