Following the release of the Great American AI Act, co-authored by Reps. Jay Obernolte and Lori Trahan, Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI, released the following statement:
“The Great American AI Act is a result of public pressure on Washington to address the rapid development of AI. We applaud the bipartisanship on issues like catastrophic risk and loss of control, and we hope that lawmakers will continue to cross the aisle to create sensible policies to address them.
“However, the Great American AI Act falls short of the framework necessary to keep Americans safe from the dangers of advanced AI. It does not justify preempting states from passing their own AI safeguards. A national AI standard should protect at least as much as it preempts, and states across the country have already enacted laws that do far more for Americans on issues like child safety and consumer protections than this proposal.
“Congress needs to build a strong floor that states can expand on. In the meantime, state lawmakers should continue to pass AI legislation to protect their people.”
