Today, a coalition of influential figures signed on to a Statement on Superintelligence warning about its risks to civil liberties, national security, the economy – and even the possibility of human extinction. The likes of Geoffrey Hinton, Steve Bannon, Glenn Beck, and Prince Harry alike agree: we can’t let AI companies race toward superintelligence at the expense of humanity.
This new statement shows that apprehension about superintelligence is widespread across backgrounds, expertise, and political lines.
“This proves that people, no matter their political affiliation or background, are truly concerned about the effects superintelligence will have on our world. As Big Tech rapidly develops advanced AI, it is important that regular people know what is at stake in the so-called AI ‘arms race,” said Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI. “Big Tech wants to unleash technology that can outsmart and even overtake humans. This is not hyperbole – anyone can look at Big Tech CEOs’ own words and actions as they continue to build advanced AI with seemingly little concern for humanity’s safety. We must stand up now for proper safeguards on AI so that we can ensure humanity is not replaced by superintelligence in the future.”
