Today, Sens. Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Mark Warner (D-VA) introduced the bipartisan AI-Related Jobs Impact and Clarity Act. The bill would help the federal government examine the ripple effects that AI and automation have on the labor force by:
- Requiring that companies and federal agencies regularly disclose information about AI’s effects on the workforce; and
- Requiring the Labor Department to make that information available to the public.
“This bill is a good first step in addressing the AI-induced jobs crisis that our country will soon have to grapple with. Americans must know how AI will impact their careers and education so they can make smart decisions about their futures,” said Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of the Alliance for Secure AI. “Americans need transparency. The so-called ‘white-collar bloodbath’ will be here before we know it. Mass layoffs can potentially lead to social and political unrest. I do not think that’s the future we want. We can create a path forward so that every American student, worker, parent, and child can find purpose and pursue the American Dream on their own terms – not the terms that AI creates for them.”
This legislation comes at a critical moment for America as the effects of AI start to shrink the labor force. Today, IBM announced that it is cutting thousands of workers as it further integrates AI into the company. Last week, Amazon and Paramount revealed that they are preparing to cut thousands of jobs in AI-driven layoffs.
