Big Tech Jamming State AI Preemption Into NDAA at Eleventh Hour

Today, The Alliance for Secure AI sounded the alarm on Big Tech trying to jam an override on state AI legislation into the NDAA, days before the NDAA is finalized. This is just one of two dirty tricks Big Tech is playing: this week, it chose its first target to use its hundreds of millions of dollars of super PAC money against.

“Big Tech is obviously attempting to scare members of Congress into doing its bidding with the threat of millions of dollars spent against them in future election cycles. CEOs that work only in their own interests – not the interests of the American public – continue to push the boundaries of their influence to see just how far they can go to supersede state sovereignty. The American people will not stand for it,” said Brendan Steinhauser, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI. “A bipartisan coalition of everyday Americans, state lawmakers, faith leaders, and grassroots activists already rejected preemption of state laws once. American AI innovation begins with safety and security, and this same coalition will continue to fight for what is right – no matter how much money Big Tech spends.”

In light of Big Tech’s blatant ruse, The Alliance for Secure AI launched an accountability campaign, States Over CEOs, to push members of Congress to shut down preemption once and for all. This campaign includes a digital ad campaign targeting the DC metro area. Watch the ad here.

In case you missed it from the first preemption fight:

  • Over 10,000 Americans signed a petition to secure AI for America and demand members of Congress vote against preemption;
  • Texas State Sen. Angela Paxton sent a letter to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) – the architect of the preemption amendment – asking him to remove the amendment from the reconciliation bill;
  • A bipartisan group of 260 state lawmakers from all 50 states signed a letter calling on Congress to stop preemption;
  • And a bipartisan group of attorneys general sent a letter to Congress urging members to reject the amendment, calling it “wholly destructive.”
