We are at a critical moment in AI development. Most experts believe that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be here soon and present unprecedented challenges to society. Some have referred to this as a technological singularity, where the rates of innovation and scientific discovery rapidly advance beyond anything we can imagine.
Global Impacts and Transformative Potential
Advanced AI will have profound impacts on the entire world—including the economy, science, medicine, national security, international relations, social cohesion, religion, philosophy, and nearly every aspect of our lives. We are excited about the potential of AI to advance science, improve health and education, and lift millions of people out of poverty. However, while we expect advanced AI to provide profound benefits to humanity, we believe that we are not yet ready for such an unprecedented technological development.

The advanced AI revolution presents new challenges that we must prepare for. For example, there are countless ways that the weaponization of advanced AI by a malicious human being or regime could lead to catastrophic consequences for humanity. Human fallibility is a major risk in a world where computers advance beyond our control. Serious thought and preparation are required to mitigate the potential downsides and risks.

This means changing the way leaders talk about AI — from corporate hype to human consequences — and creating the political space for meaningful action.
The Challenge
