About the Alliance
The Alliance for Secure AI is a bipartisan nonprofit at the forefront of the most consequential policy shift of our generation. We believe that the future of AI shouldn’t just be decided in Silicon Valley boardrooms or closed-door hearings—it must be shaped by the people who keep the country running. We bridge the gap between high-tech policy and the American workforce to ensure AI is a tool for empowerment, not displacement.
Position Overview
The Press Secretary owns how The Alliance for Secure AI tells its story externally. This person leads The Alliance’s media strategy, serves as a primary point of contact for the press, and builds the relationships and narratives that make AI safety a serious, urgent, and accessible issue for journalists, policymakers, and the public.
This is an external-facing role that requires sharp news judgment, strong writing, and the credibility to represent The Alliance across the ideological spectrum. The ideal candidate has run media relations before and can both set strategy and execute against a fast-moving news cycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor the news cycle closely and identify opportunities for media engagement.
- Develop timely pitches for reporters, editors, producers, and other media contacts.
- Build and maintain relationships with technology reporters, editors, producers, Capitol Hill press staff, communications directors, social media managers, think tanks, academic institutions, AI researchers, and scholars.
- Draft weekly talking points based on the news cycle and organizational priorities.
- Lead rapid response efforts, including drafting statements, quotes, and press materials on tight deadlines.
- Draft talking points for future events, announcements, media appearances, and news moments.
- Draft and send regular email newsletters for key audiences.
- Draft and send approximately 3 to 4 press releases or statements each month.
- Assist with coalition communications strategy calls and follow-up.
- Use public relations tools, including Cision and Muck Rack, to identify journalists, build press lists, and distribute press releases and statements.
- Contribute to written content across the website, social media platforms, op-eds, blog posts, and other public-facing materials.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will bring:
- 2 to 3 years of experience in media, communications, public relations, politics, campaigns, journalism, or a related field.
- A proven track record of successfully pitching and placing stories, quotes, op-eds, or other media hits.
- Strong copywriting, editing, and message development skills.
- Excellent written communication and time management skills.
- A high level of responsiveness to incoming messages from journalists and media contacts.
- Experience using media tools such as Cision and Muck Rack.
- Sound judgment during fast-moving or intense media cycles.
- Strong understanding of grammar, usage, punctuation, AP style, and the Oxford comma.
- Interest in AI safety, AI security, and the risks and downsides of advanced AI.
- A bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, political science, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
Preferred Experience
- Experience in nonprofit, political campaign, Capitol Hill, public affairs, or issue advocacy communications.
- Familiarity with technology policy, AI policy, national security, civil liberties, or related issue areas.
- Existing relationships with reporters, producers, Capitol Hill communicators, or policy-focused media contacts.
- Ability to move quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
