Today, in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson defending the proposed 10-year moratorium on state AI legislation in the reconciliation bill, CEO of The Alliance for Secure AI Brendan Steinhauser released the following statement:
“Our leaders in Congress have to put the interests of everyday Americans over the interests of Big Tech. Conservatives have always been advocates for federalism, and they should not backtrack on that principle now.
Often, some of the best policy ideas start at the state level and work their way up to the federal level. States have the right to protect their citizens from potential risks and harms caused by advanced artificial intelligence. We encourage lawmakers in both houses of Congress to support federalism and allow states to be the laboratories of democracy that they were meant to be.”
Conservatives and liberals are coming together to support this idea, from Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene and Sen. Marsha Blackburn to Sens. Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren.
Just this week, a bipartisan list of 260 state lawmakers from all 50 states called on Congress to remove the provision banning state legislation on AI.
